St. Virgin Mary with Child Jesus of Trakai
Unknown Lithuanian artist, 1669. Oil on wood board. St. Archangel Michael church, Nemenčinė.
Carried out examination of UV fluorescence, reflected IR photography and x-radiography revealed authentic paint layer details underneath currently visible surface. Changes in composition of Mary and Child faces, as well as their clothes and angels' figures on both sides have been identified. The inscription on the back side of wood board has been read, it indicates dates of earlier restorations and renewals of the painting. As we can observe in the x-radiograph, earlier version of St. Mary was painted without a crown, thus replicating the original composition of the painting of Trakai. The crown was added later, as well as the figures of little angels carrying it.
